Top 5 Fiercest Rivalries In The World.

The Uruguayan clasico.

1. Penarol  vs  nacional
The Superclásico of Uruguay may not receive the coverage of some of football’s other illustrious rivalries, but it is undoubtedly deserving of its place in the pantheon of the biggest derbies. Contested between Club Nacional de Football and Club Atlético Peñarol, it is the oldest footballing rivalry outside the British Isles and has captured some of the most unforgettable and entertaining games in Uruguayan football history.Peñarol were founded in 1891 by British railroad workers in Montevideo, going by the name of Central Uruguay Railway Cricket Club until it became wholly Uruguayan in 1913. They decided on club colours of yellow and black, which were the cautionary signals for the railway workers at the time. Nacional were founded in 1899, becoming the first-ever South American club to be set up by people from the continent as opposed to ex-patriots.

2. Fenerbache vs Galatasaray

Class more than culture or geography played a greater part in ramping up the animosity in Istanbul’s intercontinental derby between Fener in Asia and Gala in Europe. The former, traditionally the club of the working class, were founded in 1907, two years after Galatasaray who were considered the bourgeois club of what was still then Constantinople. Tension first turned to violence in 1934 with the players joining the fans in fights and the 81 years since have been marred by antagonism, assaults, racism and murder. It is not exactly a history that benefits from Graeme Souness’s notorious intervention.

3. Palmerias vs Corinthians

The first clash between the two occurred in 1917, when Palmeiras were still known by their former name of Palestra Italia—an indication of the community of largely Italian immigrants who composed the club's original fan base.
The tie has produced memorable encounters down the years, some for the quality of football and others for the incidents of fighting that have broken out between the two sides. When the giants meet, passions run high among both players and fans.

The Great El Clasico

4. Barcelona vs Real Madrid

The rivalry comes about as Madrid and Barcelona are the two largest cities in Spain, and they are sometimes identified with opposing political positions, with Real Madrid viewed as representing Spanish nationalism and Barcelona viewed as representing Catalan nationalism. The rivalry is regarded as one of the biggest in world sport. The two clubs are among the richest and most successful football clubs in the world.

The Superclasico

5. Boca juniors vs River Plate

The divide that splits Buenos Aires on class, geographical, cultural and style grounds, the Superclasico between 30-times domestic champions Boca from the working-class, dockside barrio of that name and River with their 36 titles from the verdant suburb of Nunez began when the two clubs were sited within a couple of miles of each other. River moved out in 1923, success inspired the wealth that led to their nickname Los Millionarios and a bitter rivalry grew. Every meeting is played out in a febrile atmosphere of extreme noise, strident bravado, resentfulness and not infrequent violence. Their head-to-head record in competitive matches currently has Boca in the lead by 84 to 77.
